This session aims to equip physicians with the awareness and tools to recognize common medical malpractice risks and their emotional and professional impact, while emphasizing the importance of systems thinking and proactive strategies to reduce risk. Participants will explore methods for maintaining resilience and psychological safety through peer support, institutional resources, and personal coping skills. Finally, they will develop a personalized plan for managing high-risk clinical situations that balances legal risk reduction with practices that sustain wellbeing, compassion and professional identity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize common medical malpractice pitfalls and their emotional and professional toll on clinicians and their families and explore how proactive awareness and systems thinking can reduce risk while supporting personal and team well-being.
  • Examine strategies to maintain professional resilience and psychological safety in the face of malpractice threats or claims, including the use of peer support, institutional resources, and personal coping mechanisms.
  • Develop a personalized plan for navigating high-risk clinical situations that integrates legal risk reduction (e.g., clear communication, thorough documentation) with intentional well-being practices that preserve purpose, compassion, and professional identity.
