Medicare Wins for Physicians and the Practice of Medicine

Medicare Wins for Physicians and the Practice of Medicine

Information in this story was received from the American Medical Association

Physicians and patients across the country recently experienced significant Medicare wins. Due to strong advocacy from the American Medical Association (AMA), further barriers to treating patients have been removed.

The wins achieved include:

  • Restored the 3.1 percent bonus for physicians in Medicare alternative payment models;
  • Expanded the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program; and
  • Required Medicare Advantage plans to maintain accurate provider directories

While these wins are a step in the correct direction, the work is far from done.

"Medicare payments still do not reflect the real cost of providing care, and that pressure continues to threaten patient access," said Bobby Mukkamala, MD, President of the American Medical Association. "We know what is possible when physicians speak up and the AMA leads. Each win builds momentum and underscores the importance of sustained advocacy in achieving Medicare reform."

The Tennessee Medical Association (TMA) continues to support advocacy efforts geared towards improvement of Medicare at the federal level. To learn how you can be a part of improving Medicare, reach out to advocacy@tnmed.org
